Elephant Polo in Nepal - Sports Tourism in Nepal
Nepal has numerous adventurous sports. Among them, Nepal’s Elephant Polo is well-known all over the world and is organized with great spunk and show. The month of December is the time when the country's major event of elephant polo is organized, with thousands of tourists hammering in from all parts of the globe. The Elephant Polo Program is organized by the World Elephant Polo Association (WEPA) annually in Chitwan National Park in Nepal.
The World Elephant Polo Association (WEPA) was established in 1982 having it's headquarter at the Tiger Tops Jungle Lodge in Chitwan, Nepal.But the venue has changed from 2010 year from Chitwan National Park to Bardia National Park by breaking its 27 years old history. During the Elephant Polo Tournament in Nepal, there are four elephants (participating four different country) each side prompted by four Mahouts. Behind them, the players are perched with a mallet
in hand. The ball that is used is the standard polo ball. According to the rule, the players are supposed to hit the other side's goal line. There are two 10-minute chukkers. These are separated by a 15-minute break. After the break, the teams change sides.
