FAQs

Annapurna Base Camp sits at 4,130m, the highest point on the route. It's lower than treks like Mardi Himal or Everest Base Camp, but still high enough that altitude, not fitness, is the main variable to plan around.

Focus on layering correctly rather than packing more. The system works in three parts. A base layer, moisture-wicking thermal worn against the skin, pulls sweat away so you don't chill when you stop moving (avoid cotton, it holds moisture and turns cold fast). A mid layer, fleece or lightweight down, is your adjustable layer for changing body temperature through the day. An outer layer, waterproof and windproof, protects you when weather shifts near the Sanctuary, where cloud cover can roll in fast even in clear season. Most first-time trekkers over-pack mid layers and under-pack a proper outer shell. One solid shell jacket does more work than three fleeces.

Essentials include trekking boots broken in well before departure, trekking poles (especially useful on the long stone staircases near Chhomrong), a sleeping bag rated to at least -15°C (teahouses provide blankets, not bags), a headlamp with spare batteries, UV sunglasses for glare at altitude, gloves and a warm hat for base camp mornings, a 30 to 40L daypack with a rain cover, a water bottle or hydration bladder with a purification method, and a power bank, since charging becomes limited and paid for above Chhomrong.

Even at 4,130m, Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a genuine risk if you ascend too fast. Watch for headache, nausea, dizziness, loss of appetite, and disrupted sleep. The rule that matters most: if symptoms worsen with rest instead of improving, descend. A well-paced itinerary with gradual elevation gain does more to prevent AMS than any fitness level.

A basic kit should include pain and fever relief (paracetamol or ibuprofen), rehydration salts (ORS), anti-diarrheal medication, blister care (moleskin, blister plasters, tape), basic antiseptic and plasters, any personal prescription medication packed in carry-on rather than checked luggage, and water purification tablets as backup to a filter. Some trekkers carry Diamox (acetazolamide) as an altitude sickness preventative, but it's a prescription medication, so speak with your doctor before travel rather than relying on trail advice.

The Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) is mandatory, currently NPR 3,000 (about $23) for foreign nationals. Unlike Everest, Langtang, or Upper Mustang, the Annapurna Conservation Area was excluded from Nepal's 2023 mandatory guide rule, so a guide isn't legally required here, though it's still recommended for safety and permit handling. The TIMS card has been dropped for most Annapurna routes since 2023, but enforcement shifts by season, so it's worth confirming current status before departure. For entry into Nepal, most nationalities can get a visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport: 15 days ($30), 30 days ($50), or 90 days ($125), payable in cash.

Treat it as non-negotiable rather than optional. Your policy needs to explicitly cover trekking up to at least 5,000m and include helicopter evacuation, since standard travel insurance often excludes high-altitude activity by default. In the Sanctuary above Chhomrong, a helicopter is the only realistic way out in a genuine emergency, and rescue costs without insurance run into the thousands of dollars.
